Slovenian crops hit hard by unusual frost this Spring: minister

Xinhua, April 26, 2017 Adjust font size:

Slovenian Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Dejan Zidan said on Wednesday that last week's frost has caused extensive damage to the country's crops, warning the deteriorating climate and its negative impacts.

The minister Wednesday presented the government with initial estimates of the damage obtained from the Chamber of Agriculture and Forestry, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and cooperatives, Slovenian Press Agency (STA) reported.

Orchards suffered the most extensive damage, around 80 percent, while in certain areas the damage is 100 percent, STA reported quoting Zidan.

Around 60 percent of vineyards in Slovenia have also been damaged, while the beekeeping sector has also suffered damage, with the production of honey expected to drop by a third.

The minister said the climate had changed, and some of the traditional measures taken by farmers to fight off the frost had been ineffective.

He said the situation on the ground was difficult and his ministry is already preparing a new emergency law to deal with the natural disaster, disclosing that compensation to farmers this year is expected to exceed the 40 million euros (43.54 million U.S. dollars) paid out by the his ministry in April last year.
