UN urges Venezuela to ease tensions, prevent clashes

Xinhua, April 20, 2017 Adjust font size:

The United Nations on Thursday urged all efforts to lower tensions in Venezuela and prevent further clashes.

A bitter power struggle between the ruling socialist party in Venezuela and the right-wing opposition has created an economic and political crisis marked by frequent street protests that have occasionally turned violent, shortages of basic goods and a highly divisive society.

The UN called on the government of Venezuela and the opposition to engage sincerely to reactivate dialogue, especially on critical issues including the balance of power among the state's branches, the electoral calendar and socioeconomic situation, UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told a daily briefing.

"We call for concrete gestures from all parties to reduce polarization and create the necessary conditions to address the country's challenges for the benefit of the Venezuelan people," said Dujarric. Endit
