Xinhua, April 12, 2017 Adjust font size:

Austrian exports in January increased by 18.4 percent to reach 11.4 billion euros (12 billion U.S. dollars), Statistics Austria revealed in preliminary figures on Wednesday.

Imports increased by a lesser 11.2 percent to 11.56 billion euros (12.3 billion U.S. dollars), leading to a significant shrinking of the trade deficit which had been 770 million euros (816 million U.S. dollars) in January 2016.

Exports to other European Union member states increased by 23.3 percent, compared to an increase in imports of only eight percent. This led to a positive trade balance of 1.01 billion euros (1.07 billion U.S. dollars), following a slight deficit in January of last year.

Trade with non-EU countries however resulted in a trade deficit of 1.17 billion euros (1.24 billion U.S. dollars), a notable increase over the 740 million euro (784 million U.S. dollar) deficit recorded a year ago.

Germany once again remained the strongest trading partner by some margin, while trade with France, Italy and Russia also saw significant growth. Endit
