Indiana closes two Lake Michigan beaches as result of chemical spill

Xinhua, April 12, 2017 Adjust font size:

The midwest U.S. state of Indiana has closed two Lake Michigan beaches as a result of chemical spill from a U.S. Steel facility, according to Wednesday's Chicago Tribune.

The Indiana American Water Company, the municipal water source closest to the spill, has shut down its water intake and resort to reserve water as a precaution.

The U.S. Steel facility, within 100 yards of Lake Michigan, reported the spill to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tuesday morning, according to the newspaper.

The chemical spill contains hexavalent chromium, a toxic byproducts of industrial process, which might be carcinogenic if ingested.

"EPA is working with the company to contain the spill," EPA said in a release. And sampling taken by EPA did not show the hexavalent chromium has reached Lake Michigan. Enditem
