Nigeria foils Boko Haram attacks on embassies

Xinhua, April 12, 2017 Adjust font size:

Nigeria's secret police said Wednesday it had foiled terror attacks targeting embassies or mission houses of the United States, Britain, and other western interests in the political capital last month.

Five fighters from the terror group Boko Haram were nabbed in connection with the foiled attacks, following an investigation by the Department of State Services, the department's spokesman Tony Opuiyo confirmed in a statement.

They were arrested late March in the central Nigeria state of Benue, the spokesman said.

Boko Haram, blamed for more than 20,000 deaths and displacement of 2.3 million people since 2009, had pledged its allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) group.

The Nigerian government has made a considerable gain on the Boko Haram front, with its security forces operating in the restive region dislodging the fighters from the Sambisa Forest, the group's largest training camp in the country, last December.

Government forces are intensifying aerial and ground patrols in the country's northeast. Endit
