India releases 39 Pakistani prisoners, fishermen

Xinhua, March 2, 2017 Adjust font size:

India on Wednesday released 39 Pakistani prisoners and fishermen imprisoned in different jails, officials said.

Thirty-nine Pakistani prisoners, comprising 21 civil prisoners and 18 fishermen, were being repatriated to Pakistan via Attari-Wagah border checkpoint on Wednesday, according to a statement issued by India's Foreign Ministry.

The civil prisoners had been arrested for living illegally in India after expiry of their visas, while the fishermen had been arrested for entering Indian waters by mistake during fishing.

Reports said Indian border guards handed over these prisoners to Pakistani rangers at Attari-Wagah border on Wednesday afternoon. Endit
