Macedonia launched a new EU-funded twinning project on Wednesday to maintain consumer protection, achieve higher food safety standards and increase competitiveness in the EU market.
The project has a total budget of around 751,000 euros (793,093 U.S. dollars) and will be implemented by the Food and Veterinary Agency in the next 17 months, local media reported.
At the launching ceremony, Macedonian Minister of Agriculture Mihail Cvetkov and EU Ambassador to Skopje Samuel Zbogar said the project would help introduce and share EU best practices in order to improve food safety, veterinary and phytosanitary policies.
"The occurrence of outbreaks of animal diseases can harm not only the animals and people but also the overall economy and trade," Zbogar said.
In the framework of the twining project, new animal health legislation will be drafted in line with the newly-developed EU legislation. Endit
