Nissan trials self-driving cars in Europe

Japanese multinational automobile manufacturer Nissan on Monday introduced self-driving cars here as part of a trial.

The trial is among the first on-road autonomous vehicle demonstrations conducted in Europe where debates about the safety of self-driving technology are ongoing.

Nissan has conducted public-road testing in Japan and the United States to pursue autonomous drive technology in real life situations.

The prototype vehicle is equipped with special features such as a millimeter wave radar, laser scanners, cameras and a specialized human machine interface to support autonomous driving.

Takao Asami, senior vice president of Research and Advanced Engineering at Nissan, said the test of Nissan's forthcoming autonomous drive technology in the demanding conditions of London streets and weather underlines the company's commitment to delivering the intelligent mobility.

Nissan said a multi-lane autonomous driving technology will enable automatic lane changes on highways and is planned for introduction in 2018. Autonomous driving on urban roads and in intersections is planned for launch in 2020. Endit
