Albania's population grows to 2.88 mln

Albania's population was estimated to be 2.88 million as of Jan. 1, 2017, the National Institute of Statistics (INSTAT), said on Monday.

According to INSTAT, Albania's population grew by 1,000 persons compared with the previous year.

The average age of Albania's population grew from 34 years in 2015 to 35 years in 2016, data showed.

The population increased in three districts while it registered a decline in all nine other prefectures across the country, INSTAT said.

The highest growth rate was registered in Tirana with 23 per 1,000 inhabitants, followed by Durres in central Albania with 16.5 per 1,000 inhabitants and Vlora in southern Albania at 4.15 per 1,000 inhabitants.

The highest decline rates were recorded in Gjirokaster in the south of Albania, Diber, Berat and Kukes in northern Albania.

Based on the data, the population of Albania in 2016 increased by around 0.3 per 1,000 inhabitants. Endit
