The Speaker of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), Daniel Kidega, on Monday praised the efforts made by Tanzanian President John Magufuli in developing the east African nation's economy.
"I am appealing to Tanzanians and the East African region to support President Magufuli in his efforts to improve the country's economy," said Kidega during talks with the President at State House in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam.
A statement by the Directorate of Presidential Communication said the two leaders held talks on the region's economic cooperation.
"Tanzania and the East African region are lucky to get a capable leader like President Magufuli who is leading by example and I am appealing to Tanzanians and fellow East Africans to give him full support," said Kidega.
The EALA Speaker said it was high time the region respected leaders who worked tirelessly for the benefit of the people.
Last month, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said Tanzania's macro-economic performance remained strong.
"Economic growth was robust during the first half of 2016 and is projected to remain at about 7 percent this fiscal year," said the IMF in its fifth review under the policy support instrument for Tanzania.
Meanwhile, Magufuli held bilateral talks with British High Commissioner to Tanzania, Sarah Cooke, where they discussed various issues, including trade, and the fight against corruption and drug trafficking.
The head of state assured the British envoy of Tanzania's continued relationship.
He said Tanzania will continue fighting drug trafficking and corruption, the two vices that derailed efforts aimed at improving the economy.
Magufuli also held talks with the new Resident Representative of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Bhaswar Mukhopadhyay where they discussed development projects financed by the IMF. Endit
