Xinhua, February 8, 2017 Adjust font size:

The twin panda cubs born at the Schonbrunn Zoo here on Tuesday turned half a year old, the zoo said in a press release.

The twins, Fu Feng and Fu Ban, have up until now stayed in an interior enclosure with their mother Yang Yang, visible to guests via video footage, it said.

They are to be allowed into the outdoor enclosure visible to zoo visitors in the spring, the zoo said.

The cubs were said to be able to climb well, play regularly, and often sleep.

They are fed by their mother twice a day, and have also begun to eat bamboo leaves, while still considering tougher stalks as toys.

The zoo also revealed that the remains of panda Long Hui, the father of the twin cubs who died in early December last year, are to be transported back to his birth country of China. It will take place after certain preparations are made.

The 16-year-old panda, who had been unwell for some time, died from complications of an anaesthesia administered to inspect a stomach tumour. The tumour had also been found to be inoperable. Endit
