Genzebe Dibaba sets new 2,000 meters indoor record in Spanish meeting

Ethiopian athlete, Genzebe Dibaba set a new women's 2,000 meters indoor record in a meeting in the Spanish city of Sabadell (north-east Spain) on Tuesday night.

Dibaba set her record in the Catalunya International Meeting with a time of 5 minutes and 23.75 seconds, knocking a second and a half off the long-standing previous record of 5:25.36, which was set by Ireland's Sonia O' Sullivan in 1994.

The Ethiopian set a time of 2:42 for the first 1,000 meters and reached the 1,500 meter mark with a time of 4:03. She maintained her pace in the last 500 meters to set the new world record, which is added to her indoor records for 1,500 meters (3:55.17), mile (4:13.31), 3,000 (8:16.60), two miles (9:00.48) and 5,000 meters (14:18.86), as well as her outdoor 1,500 meters record of 3:50.07.

Dibaba was followed over the line on Tuesday by Moroccan, Siham Hilali and her fellow countrywoman, Anna Dibaba. Endit
