Prosecutor asks for jail term for Lucas for domestic abuse incident

Xinhua, February 7, 2017 Adjust font size:

A Spanish Public Prosecutor has asked for a seven month jail term for Atletico Madrid's 20-year-old defender Lucas Hernandez for domestic abuse.

Hernandez was arrested by police in his home in the town of Las Rozas close to Madrid in the early hours of Friday morning following an incident with his girlfriend Amelia Lorente.

While Lorente was taken to hospital for treatment for several minor injuries, Hernandez, who also suffered cuts and bruises in the incident, spent the night in the police cells and both were scheduled to appear in court on Monday morning.

Attempts by the pair to strike a deal with the Magistrate were rejected and their cases will now be tried in a criminal court at a still to be determined date.

Lorente will also face domestic abuse charges, with the prosecutor asking for her to be given a six-month jail term and for her to pay a fine of 10 euros a day (around 11 US dollars) for a two-month jail term.

The couple were also given a mutual restraining order forbidding them from being within 500 meters of each other and from establishing contact by any means for the next two years.

Following Hernandez's arrest on Friday, Atletico Madrid issued a communique saying that while the club "understand the public importance of the incident" involving Hernandez, "we ask for the players right to be presumed innocent to be respected," while adding they "condemn any kind of violence."
