Croatia bans outdoor poultry on bird flu detection

Xinhua, January 17, 2017 Adjust font size:

Croatia banned keeping poultry outdoor on Monday and started to cull poultry in several farms near Zagreb following the detection of bird flu virus.

Over the weekend, the highly infectious H5N8 bird flu virus was detected at a farm in Sop Bukevski, some 30 km southeast of the capital Zagreb.

"We decided to ban keeping poultry in the open until there was no more risk of infection" Agriculture Minister Tomislav Tolusic said.

He said that the virus probably came with migratory birds.

Tolusic said all necessary measures have been taken at some 50 other farms nearby and a quarantine zone with a 10-kilometre diameter has been established.

The owners of the fowls to be culled would be compensated within a month, he added.

Two weeks ago, there was a similar case at another farm in northeastern Croatia. Enditem
