Russia is ready to supply the Philippines with "sophisticated" brand-new weapons instead of used ones, Russian Ambassador to the Philippines Igor Khovaev said Wednesday.
Russia is "ready to supply small arms and light weapons, some airplanes, helicopters, submarines and many other weapons," he told a news conference on board the Russian anti-submarine destroyer Admiral Tributs, which is docked in Manila for a goodwill visit from Jan. 2 to Jan. 7.
"Russia has a lot to offer but everything will be done in full compliance with international law," he said.
Kovhaev voiced optimism about the relationship between the Philippines and Russia, hoping that Russia and the Philippines would eventually forge a military and defense cooperation in the future.
Besides the anti-submarine ship, a Russian large tanker Boris Butoma also moored to a pier in Manila.
Kovhaev said Russia is looking forward to the official visit of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte to Russia this spring.
The specific date is still being finalized, he added. Endit
