Czech police leave for 7th mission in Macedonia

Xinhua, January 3, 2017 Adjust font size:

A team of 40 Czech police left on Monday for the seventh border protection mission in Macedonia, said Czech police chief Tomas Tuhy.

The Czech police will help to protect the Greek-Macedonian border near the Gevgelija town.

Tuhy said over 200 Czech policemen participated in the previous missions on the Macedonian-Greek border.

The Czech team will be deployed in Macedonia until February and further Czech police missions in Macedonia will follow.

Czech police's foreign missions began in 2015 when the migrant crisis broke out. Czech police have been operating in countries situated along the Balkans route, which hundreds of thousands of migrants used to enter Central Europe.

So far, over 400 Czech police officers have participated in 14 foreign missions in Macedonia, Hungary, Slovenia, Serbia and Greece.

Next week, another police unit will leave for Serbia to help protect the Schengen area borders, said Tuhy. Endit
