South Sudan's president to visit Khartoum within days

Xinhua, January 3, 2017 Adjust font size:

South Sudan's President Salva Kiir Mayardit is to visit Sudan within days, South Sudan Foreign Minister Deng Alor announced on Monday.

Alor on Monday delivered a written message from President Kiir to his Sudanese counterpart Omar al-Bashir regarding the bilateral relations between the two countries.

"The president's visit to Khartoum will be within a few days to discuss the outstanding issues between the two countries," Alor told reporters.

The border issue is the biggest obstacle to the settlement of differences between Sudan and South Sudan.

In September 2012, the two countries signed a cooperation agreement in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa under the patronage of the African Union.

The agreement included a package of understandings related to security, citizens' status, border and economic issues and others relating to oil and trade. However, the signed agreements did not tackle the issues of Abyei and border demarcation. Endit
