Portuguese parliament asks government to restore senior help-line

Xinhua, January 3, 2017 Adjust font size:

Portugal's parliament demanded the government on Monday to reactivate a 24-hour senior help-line, to ensure the elderly's needs are met.

The service, which opened in April 2014, assisted at least 20,000 elderly people until it was suspended in December 2015, when the Portuguese Directorate-General for Health said it needed funds to cope with a flu.

But the parliament said the help-line is important to guarantee the necessary care and support to the elderly, especially those live alone.

The parliament, meanwhile, also urged the government to reinforce the training of health professionals in the geriatrics at postgraduate level. Endit
