Finnish church arsonist to receive psychiatric treatment

Xinhua, December 30, 2016 Adjust font size:

A man who burnt down an 18th-century wooden church in Finland in March this year was ordered to receive psychiatric treatment, a Finnish court ruled on Thursday.

The man, who set ablaze the church in Finland's city of Ylivieska during Easter, could not be held criminally responsible as he had been receiving treatment for paranoid schizophrenia for several years.

Local parish has not demanded any financial compensation, according to local media reports. The man was ordered to pay minor compensation to owners of damaged grave stones.

The rebuilding of the church, whose history dates back to 1786, will cost 10 million euros(10.48 million U.S. dollars). Insurance companies will pay seven million euros and the rest will be covered by donations. Endit
