The United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) on Wednesday said the armed conflict in the region could not be militarily resolved.
"While emphasizing that there is no military solution to this conflict, UNAMID continues to promote reconciliation and peace initiatives," said UNAMID Chief Martin Uhomoibhi in end-of-year message.
He said the mission would carry on with its mandate assiduously and remain committed to the cause of peace, stability and security in Darfur.
"Armed clashes among different communal groups in various locations around Darfur and the renewal of conflict in the Jebel Marra area have resulted in numerous casualties and mass displacements," he noted.
He further added that 2016 hasn't been an easy year for the people of Darfur and for UNAMID staff, mentioning lost of a colleague from South Africa in hostile action, and some others who passed away due to unfortunate incidents.
UNAMID, which consists of over 20,000 personnel of military, police and civilian components, took over the peacekeeping mission in Darfur from the African Union Mission in Sudan on Dec. 31, 2007.
It is considered the second biggest peacekeeping mission in the world, after the UN Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Endit
