Austria sees sharp rise in cybercrime, violent crime in 2016

Xinhua, December 29, 2016 Adjust font size:

Austria has seen significant increases in both cybercrime and violent crime in 2016, General Director for Public Security Konrad Kogler said in an interview on a radio program on Wednesday.

He said a massive spike in cybercrime of over 20-percent had been recorded, that included attacks on computer systems as well as Internet-related crimes such as online shopping fraud.

Violent crime meanwhile saw an increase of over 10 percent, Kogler noted, adding that such offences had sometimes been made by groups of people.

Kogler further noted that people smuggling had also been on the increase this year, with almost 50,000 persons apprehended. Endit
