Kyrgyz President signs amendments to constitution

President of Kyrgyzstan Almazbek Atambayev signed the law on "introducing amendments to the Constitution," adopted by the referendum on Dec. 11, the press service of the Kyrgyz President reported on Wednesday.
The constitutional changes adopted by the referendum are aimed at strengthening the independence and sovereignty, parliamentarism, clarification of the principles of interaction between the legislative and executive branches of government, improving the constitutional basis for the continuation of judicial reform and the reform of law enforcement agencies.
Amendments to the constitution will take effect on January 15, 2017.
Some 79.7 percent of Kyrgyz citizens voted to support changes by referendum, while 15.40 percent voted against.
In total, 29 articles of the current constitution will be changed.
It was the eighth constitutional referendum held in Kyrgyzstan since the independence. Endit
