Singapore's authorities to start collecting iris images next year

Xinhua, December 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) will start collecting iris images from Singapore citizens and permanent residents next year as another identifier, in addition to photographs and fingerprints, said Singapore Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in a press release on Wednesday.

The change which will take effect from Jan. 1, 2017, is part of amendments to the National Registration Act passed in Parliament on Nov. 10.

The MHA said the amendments will enable the ICA to strengthen the effectiveness and efficiency of its operations.

The collection will be done as part of the identity card registration and re-registration process, as well as part of the passport application and renewal process, added MHA. Enditem
