Women body decry continued cases of gender-based violence in Zambia

A women's body on Tuesday expressed concern over the continued cases of gender-based violence in Zambia, noting that it was evident that the country was not making any progress in tackling the problem.

The came after four men died at the hands of their wives last month in the country while in the last four days, two women were killed by their husbands, with one being burnt.

The Non-governmental Organizations Coordinating Council said it was deeply concerned with the gender-based violence that has resulted in fatalities.

Engwase Mwale, the organization's executive director said that the increasing gender-based violence cases was a matter that deserves full national attention.

"We call upon our national leaders to facilitate a national thinking and reflection on how to root out this evil because indeed no leader wants to preside over a nation whose citizens are under siege and violated daily," she added.

According to government figures, Zambia has this year recorded 13,092 cases of gender-based violence. Endit
