Latvia's largest ammunition storage facility unveiled

Xinhua, December 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Latvian National Armed Forces on Tuesday unveiled the country's largest military ammunition storage facility, public radio reported Tuesday.

Latvian Defense Minister Raimonds Bergmanis and Chief of Defense Major General Raimonds Graube attended the project's inauguration ceremony in Vainode, southwestern Latvia.

The construction of the military ammunition storehouses, which costed around seven million euros(7.32 million U.S. dollars), was completed in eight months. The project will serve the needs of the military units stationed in the western Latvian region of Kurzeme and as a national supply base.

Sources from the military explained that Vainode, a relatively remote municipality in southwestern Latvia, was chosen as the location for the ammunition storage facility for several reasons.

Given the strict security requirements for such a facility, the storehouses needed to be built some distance away from dwelling houses and residential areas. The project's designers also took into consideration prospective economic growth and business activities in the region, military spokesmen said.

Easy access to transport infrastructure, especially to the Port of Liepaja, was also considered when the storehouse complex was built. Enditem
