Spanish, Moroccan police arrest 24 in joint anti-drugs operation

Xinhua, December 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

A joint operation between Spanish and Moroccan police has led to the seizure of 2.57 tonnes of cocaine and the arrest of 24 people, the Spanish Interior Ministry confirmed on Wednesday.

A total of 18 arrests were made by Moroccan authorities and six in Spain, as drugs were seized from a fishing boat.

The Spanish Interior Ministry said those arrested formed part of "the most active group of narcotics smugglers which was operating in Europe, Africa and South America."

The gang used a fleet of boats to smuggle shipments of cocaine into Europe, through ports in the north-western Spanish region of Galicia, they added.

Spanish Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido on Wednesday highlighted the collaboration between the Spanish and Moroccan police, saying it was part of the "foundation for stopping organized crime networks."

Zoido is currently on an official visit to Rabat. Endit
