Flood hits S. Spain, killing woman

A 29-year-old woman lost her life on Sunday as intense rain caused flooding in the province of Malaga in the south of Spain, local media reported.

The woman reported to be of Romanian origin in the Spanish media drowned after being trapped in the basement of a club in the coastal town of Estepona.

Rescue services received over 600 telephone calls to deal with localized flooding as the region was placed under red alert as a result of the extreme weather conditions which saw some areas receive 200 liters per square meter.

A family with nine children needed rescuing by Civil Protection units in the town of Alhaurin de l Torre, while the Civil Guard used helicopters to lift various people trapped on rooftops around Cartama and Mijas.

The rain caused services to be suspended during the morning on the Malaga Metro, although services resumed as the rain eased and the alert level lowered to "yellow" around 13:30 local time.

Nevertheless, the government delegate in Malaga has raised the Emergency Response plan to level two, which would allow the Spanish Emergency Military Intervention Unit to be called out to help where needed. Endit
