Ghana issues dengue fever alert

Xinhua, November 20, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) said on Saturday that it has received notification and alert of dengue fever outbreak in neighbouring Burkina Faso from the Work Health Organization Country Office.

In a statement signed by Dr. Kofi Asemanyi-Mensah, the Deputy Western Regional Director of Public Health, the GHS is asking health facilities to keep alert and enhance surveillance and update their respective preparedness and response plans for dengue and other viruses.

It said blood sample especially of suspected cases should be sent in triple package protection with appropriate and adequately filled case based form and sent to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) at the University of Ghana in Accra for laboratory tests.

Dengue fever is a debilitating mosquito-tropical disease characterized by sudden fever and acute joint pains. "We will keep you posted with further developments," said the statement. Endit
