Reburial of Polish former presidential couple held in Krakow

A reburial service for Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria, Poland's presidential couple who died in a plane crash near Smolensk, Russia, in 2010, was held in Krakow's Wawel Castle on Friday following an earlier exhumation.

The private service, with a military guard of honour, was attended by a close circle of family members and Poland's top officials, including President Andrzej Duda, Prime Minister Beata Szydlo and the late president's twin brother Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the leader of the ruling Law and Justice, Polish Press Agency reported.

The exhumation of the presidential couple took place on Monday night and was the first in a series of 83 exhumations planned by the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party in an ongoing investigation into the April 10, 2010 air crash which killed all 96 people onboard the presidential plane, including a significant number of VIPs.

PiS politicians have challenged a report under Poland's previous government which concluded the crash was an accident.

The remains were taken to the Department of Forensic Medicine of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, as an autopsy and laboratory tests will be performed later by a team of 14 international experts. Endit
