German digital association: 25 pct streaming media users not need traditional TV

One in four people who use streaming media services said they could accept a future scenario without traditional television, according to survey results released by the German digital association Bitkom on Friday.

Streaming media is multimedia offered by content providers, that allows viewers to watch or listen to events online in real time.

"Classic television is losing its importance, and the future belongs to streaming services and media libraries," said Timm Lutter, the association's expert in consumer electronics and digital media.

The results also show that 72 percent of streaming media users don't feel the pressure any more to turn on television on time for their favorite channels, "Television audience emancipate themselves from being passive consumers to become active users, who can determine their own television programs," he said.

About half of streaming media users said they have watched traditional television less since streaming media can be watched on the internet, especially among those between 14 to 29 years old, where the proportion reached even 63 percent, according to the results.

The survey conducted by the association included 1,007 participants above 14 years old; 642 of them are streaming media users. Endit
