Fiji seeks U.S. support on climate change, ocean protection

Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has congratulated U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and requested U. S. support on fighting climate change and ocean pollution.

"We especially seek America's support in our struggle against the extreme weather events and rising sea levels caused by climate change, which pose a particular threat to the Pacific islands and other low lying areas of the world," Bainimarama told Trump in his letter of congratulations, which was disclosed to local media Friday.

"We also look forward to working with you to protect our oceans and seas from the threat of pollution and overfishing," Bainimarama added, while wishing Trump "every best as you prepare to assume the presidency."

Republican presidential nominee Trump, 70, won the Nov. 8 presidential election in the United States and is set to succeed Democratic Barack Obama as the next U.S. president. Endit
