Myanmar peace negotiation focuses on four unsettled proposals

Xinhua, November 11, 2016 Adjust font size:

Peace negotiation between the Myanmar government's Peace Commission and Delegation for Political Negotiation (DPN) of the United Nationalities Federal Council (UNFC), which was held in Yangon Thursday, focused on four proposals out of eight left unsettled, official media reported Friday.

The UNFC represents the non-signatory armed groups to the Nationwide Cease fire Accord (NCA).

It was the third negotiation between the two sides.

According to U Hla Maung Shwe, member of the Peace Commission, the unsettled proposals are mainly concerned with the Joint Monitoring Committee and the issue will be further discussed at the political framework review meeting at the end of this month.

Myanmar government has agreed to four out of eight points demanded by the UNFC at the previous meeting in Yangon in October on the occasion of the anniversary of NCA, leaving the remaining four points for further negotiation.

The gathering aimed to pave way for non-signatory armed groups to the NCA to complete the signing before a national-level political dialogue is to start later this month as agreed at the 21st Century Panglong Peace Conference in Aug-Sept in Nay Pyi Taw.

The initial national-level political dialogue is set to begin in some regions and states, probably Kayin state and Tanintharyi region that are ready to host them.

The national-level political dialogues are expected to represent all-inclusiveness with opinions and voices of the people including ethnic people in order to establish a union based on democracy and federal system as envisioned in the NCA for peace building. Enditem
