Airport security stepped up in Bangladesh after deadly knife attack

Bangladesh has stepped up security in the airport in Dhaka two days after a knife attack there to thwart any further incident, the country's Civil Aviation Minister Rashed Khan Menon said Tuesday.

After attending a high-level meeting on the airport's security situation Tuesday, Menon told journalists that "there was no lapse in security of the airport even earlier."

He said the security measures at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport have been heightened in view of the attack.

Menon ruled out for now issuing red or orange alerts at the airport.

He said identity of the attacker, who is undergoing treatment at a Dhaka hospital, could not be confirmed yet.

One security guard was killed and three others were injured in the stabbing attack on Sunday night at the airport.

A Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) official had earlier told Xinhua that a knife-wielding man attacked the security personnel posted at the entrance to the departure lounge of the airport on Sunday night.

The DMP official said later law enforcers shot down the attacker and captured him alive.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Endit
