Death toll of Pakistan's ship-breaking yard rises to 14

Xinhua, November 2, 2016 Adjust font size:

At least 14 laborers were killed and 59 others injured in an explosion during work on a dismantled ship at a shipbreaking yard in Pakistan's southwest Balochistan province on Tuesday, officials said.

Akbar Harifal, Home Secretary Balochistan, said that the explosion happened when a gas cylinder exploded and its fire engulfed the ship, which was being dismantled for scrap at the Gadani ship-breaking yard of Hub, a district located in Balochistan.

Police said that eight explosions took place at the yard. The injured people have been shifted to a nearby hospital where several of them are said to be in critical condition.

The country's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif expressed sorrow over the incident and directed hospital authorities to provide best possible medical treatment to the injured people.

Gadani ship-breaking yard is the world's third largest ship breaking yard. The yard consists of 132 ship-breaking plots located across a 10 km long beachfront at Gadani. Endit
