Turkey sends tanks to province near Iraqi border

Xinhua, November 2, 2016 Adjust font size:

Turkish Armed Forces started to dispatch tanks and other armored vehicles to the country's southeastern Sirnak Province near the Iraqi border on Tuesday, state Anadolu Agency reported.

Tanks from the Ankara-based 28th Mechanized Infantry Brigade were deployed to Silopi, a district of Sirnak, according to a source who asked to remain anonymous.

"We have to be ready for any possibilities," Defense Minister Fikri Isik said in a televised interview on Tuesday in reply to sending tanks to the Iraqi border.

The deployment came ahead of an offensive to clear the Islamic State militants from the Iraqi town of Tal Afar.

On Saturday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Ankara was planning to reinforce its troops in the region and the country would make a "different response" if Shiite militias in Iraq "cause terror" in Tal Afar. Endit
