The bodies of a 27-year-old Syrian woman and her two daughters were found dead in a freezer in Denmark's Jutland peninsula on Sunday, local media reported Monday, citing police sources.

Police in South Jutland are investigating the case and hunting for the woman's husband, who is a suspect, according to the Danish newspaper The Copenhagen Post.

The husband is also the father of the children, who are seven and nine years old respectively, and police said in a statement that the case was a "family tragedy".

According to the newspaper, the woman and the girls were last seen alive Wednesday or Thursday. One of the woman's relatives went to the police after not being able to make contact with her for several days.

Police said when and how the killings occurred is still being investigated.

According to the police, the family came to Denmark in the summer of 2015 and had refugee status.

In 2015, 21,000 people sought asylum in Denmark. Endit
