Zambia gov't demands probe into fire at cultural village

Xinhua, November 1, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Zambian government on Monday demanded a thorough probe into the cause of a fire that swept through a popular cultural village situated in the southern city of Livingstone.

A fire swept through Maramba Cultural Village on Saturday night, damaging a restaurant, a bar and an open air hall but the fire did not catch a multi-purpose theatre and other facilities.

The cultural village, which offers traditional dances every weekend as well as on public holidays, among other cultural and tourism activities, was popular with tourists in Zambia's tourism capital.

Minister of Tourism and Arts Charles Banda said a comprehensive report should be compiled after investigations from all relevant authorities.

He said in a statement that it was regrettable to have the only cultural village in the tourist capital gutted by fire barely two years after the government rebuilt it.

He said the government has plans to use the village as a model to be replicated in all the country's 10 provinces to promote cultural activities as a form of tourist attraction. Endit
