Belarus eyes for alternative to Russian oil

Xinhua, October 29, 2016 Adjust font size:

Belarus is studying the possibility of replacing the Russian oil, Belarusian concern Belneftekhim chairman Igor Lyashenko told local media on Friday.

"Any normal organization has a fallback. We have diversified before and we will continue to experiment", Lyashenko said.

The official also said that Russia has not yet returned to the supply of oil to Belarus in previous volumes. "While we are in standby mode," said the head of the concern.

Earlier Belneftekhim reported that in the 3rd quarter instead of the planned 6 million tons of Russian oil only 3.5 million tons was delivered to Belarus.

The Russian side linked the decrease in supply with Belarusian non-payment for Russian gas. Later in October, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich announced the reached agreement with Belarus and the return of the supply of oil to the previously agreed volumes.

Minsk, in turn, promised to pay off the debt for the supplied Russian gas.

Earlier it was reported that Belarus has resumed oil supplies from Azerbaijan. On Oct. 19 to the Ukrainian port of Odessa the tanker from Azerbaijani arrived with 847,000 tons of oil for Belarus. Endit
