Slovenia police to have sweeping powers to curb increased migrants inflow

Xinhua, October 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Slovenian government has decided to enable its police to get new surveillance tools and powers when some controversial amendments to the act on police powers was adopted on Thursday.

The government's decision was believed to be a move to tighten control on its borders in case of increased migrant inflow and to give police new police powers, according to Slovenian Press Agency (STA).

Slovenian police officers will be allowed to use electric stun guns, better known as tasers, when they have to apply physical force. The plan is to buy 15 in the year of 2017 and 25 in 2018.

Slovenian Interior Minister Vesna Gyorkos Znidar said this was in line with the principle of providing security while keeping encroachment on human rights to a minimum.

They will also get automatic licence plate recognition systems, the STA report said, and access to air passenger records by collecting, archiving and processing air passenger records, which Gyorkos Znidar said was urgent in the fight against terrorism. Endit
