EU adds 10 more Syrian high-ups on sanction list

Xinhua, October 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

The European Union (EU) on Thursday added 10 syrian high-ups to a sanction list which targets those "responsible for the violent repression" against the war-torn country's civilians.

Those persons include high-ranking military officials and senior figures linked to the Syrian government, who under the decision will face a travel ban and an asset freeze, the EU said in a press release.

It added that the names of the persons concerned will be published in the Official Journal on Friday.

The total number of persons targeted by the bloc "for the violent repression" against civilians in Syria reaches 217 after the decision, said the press release.

In addition, 69 entities are targeted by an asset freeze.

More broadly, sanctions currently in place against Syria include an oil embargo, restrictions on certain investments, a freeze of the assets of the Syrian central bank within the EU.

The EU also restricts export on equipment and technology that might be used for internal repression. These measures were last extended on May 27 2016 and are in place until June 1 2017.

The EU said it remains committed to finding a lasting solution to the conflict in Syria, as there is no military solution to the Syrian civil war. Endit
