Death toll from spurious liquor poisoning in Ukraine rises to 28

The death toll in spurious liquor poisoning case in eastern Ukraine rose to 28 after 17 other people died in hospitals over the past few days, the State Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection said Tuesday.

According to the statement on the website of the agency, 23 of the victims lived in Kharkov region, while five people were residents of Donetsk region.

Since Sept. 22, a total of 62 people have been hospitalized in eastern Ukraine after drinking spurious liquor bought in small grocery shops, 34 of them are still fighting for lives in hospitals.

The Ukrainian authorities opened a criminal investigation into the case. The toxic chemicals, which have caused the mass poisoning, have not been disclosed yet.

According to the Ukrainian association of alcohol makers "Ukrvodka," about half of liquor that is traded in the country is counterfeit. Endit
