Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, has approved the deployment of the AU short-term observation (STO) mission to the presidential election in Cape Verde scheduled for Oct. 2.

The observers are expected in Praia, Cape Verde, on Sept. 24 and will remain in the country until Oct. 6, said an AU statement on Friday.

Comprising 20 observers, the AU mission will be led by Manuel Serifo Nhamadjo, former President of Guinea Bissau, according to the statement.

The observers are drawn from the Pan African Parliament, the Permanent Representative Committee of the African Union, election management bodies, civil society organizations, think tanks, media and academic institutions.

The observers will be deployed throughout the electoral constituencies of the country to monitor the electoral process and to consult with key stakeholders involved in the electoral process, including government and electoral officials, candidates and political parties, civil society representatives and media to provide a critical assessment of the election.
