Morocco requests to join African Union

Xinhua, September 24, 2016 Adjust font size:

Morocco has officially submitted a request to accede to the African Union (AU) Constitutive Act and become an AU member, said a statement from the pan-African bloc on Friday.

Taieb Fassi Fihri, Adviser to King Mohammed VI on Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Morocco, informed Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, AU Commission Chairperson, that Morocco had submitted the letter of intent on Thursday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and handed a copy to her, the statement said.

The two met on the sidelines of the 71st Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The Chairperson acknowledged the receipt and said due process will be followed, including informing member states, before notifying Morocco of the outcome.

The Adviser also informed the Chairperson of plans underway to host the 22nd Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which is scheduled to take place in Marrakech in 2017. Endit
