Foreign investors in Albania seek more protection from state

The association of the foreign investors in Albania (FIAA) made an appeal Thursday to the Albanian state, seeking the latter to provide more protection for their investments in the country.
Such request comes two days after one of the biggest investors here, OMNIX company, declared that it had decided to withdraw its 450 million euros (about 504 million U.S. dollars) investment in Albania following the physical attack to its owner by unidentified persons.
The foreign investors association condemned the attack and violence exerted against the general administrator of OMNIX group, Fadi Mitri, while although it considered this an isolated case, FIAA asked the Albanian government to prevent such incidents.
This incident took place in a moment when FIAA, international partners and the Albanian government are intensively working together to improve the business climate and attract more foreign investments, which are so necessary for the country's development and improvement of life standards, the press statement of FIAA said.
Mitri was physically attacked on Sept. 10, while on Sept. 20 he made public the decision of his company to leave Albania and withdraw the investments here.
Actually, such incident has spurred many heated debates in Albania. This was also the main topic discussed during Thursday plenary session, during which the opposition lawmakers blamed the government for not protecting foreign investors. Endit
