Valencia sack coach Ayestaran

Xinhua, September 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

Spanish BBVA Primera Liga club Valencia became the first side in Spain to sack their coach this season when they confirmed on Tuesday that Pako Ayestaran has been relieved of his duties.

The club confirmed the decision in a communique which comes in the wake of Sunday's 2-1 defeat away to Athletic Club Bilbao on Sunday afternoon.

That result leaves Valencia bottom of the table with four defeats from four matches.

The official Valencia website explained the decision had been taken "after analyzing the current sporting situation and the results that have been obtained."

Former player Voro Gonzalez has been confirmed as temporary coach for the second time in under a year while the club works in signing a new coach. Gonzalez's first game in charge will be at home to unbeaten Deportivo Alaves on Thursday.

Although Ayestaran's numbers as coach were worse than those of Gary Neville, whom he replaced towards the end of last season, the fact he is the seventh coach following Mauricio Pellegrino, Ernesto Valverde, Miroslav Djukic, Juan Antonio Pizzi, Nuno Espiritu Santo and Neville to come and go since Unai Emery left Valencia in 2012, implies Valencia' s problems are more deep-rooted than can be solved by simply changing the man in the dugout.
