Zambian gov't says on course to prepare 2017 budget

Xinhua, September 7, 2016 Adjust font size:

A senior official said on Wednesday that the Zambian government was on course in its preparation for next year's budget.

Fredson Yamba, Secretary to the Treasury expressed optimism that all budget preparatory processes will be completed in time for the budget to be presented in three months' time before the commencement of financial year in January next year.

The official said the new government will have a maximum of 90 days following the swearing-in of the president-elect in which to present the budget to the National Assembly.

"This is sufficient time for the new cabinet to give guidance on policy and program priorities for next year's budget, and for the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (2017-2019)," he said in a statement.

President Edgar Lungu, who was re-elected after the August 11 polls, will be sworn in next Tuesday, according to a statement released by the government on Monday.

The government, he said, issued invitation to stakeholders and members of the public to submit proposals for tax and non-tax revenue policy review for next year's budget three months ago in order to facilitate broad consultation in the budget preparation process.

An Inter-Ministerial Tax Policy Review Committee has since been constituted to review the submissions from stakeholders, he added. Endit
