Vinci secures a US Open last 16 spot

Roberta Vinci, last year's U.S. Open runner-up, beat the 102nd-ranked Carina Witthoeft 6-0, 5-7, 6-3 in the third round here on Friday in the US Open.

This is the fourth time Vinci, the seventh-seeded Italian, has reached the round of 16 at the US Open. While the 21-year-old Witthoeft, who's been ranked as high as 49th, is still looking to make her first Grand Slam round of 16.

"She was a great player. It was the first match between us. She played a great match," Vinci said of her opponent Witthoeft. Enditem
