Five parks in New York City's less wealthy area to receive upgrade financing

Xinhua, August 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

Five parks in New York City' s less wealthy neighborhoods will receive 150 million U.S. dollars for upgrades, announced Mayor Bill de Blasio in a recent news conference.

The funding will go to major improvements like new soccer fields, running tracks and hiking trails to the five parks, one in each of the city's five boroughs.

The parks include Saint Mary's Park in the Bronx, Highbridge Park in Manhattan, Betsy Head Park in Brooklyn, Astoria Park in Queens and Freshkills Park on State Island, and were selected based on historical underinvestment, high surrounding population and potential for park development, according to city officials.

The effort was aimed to tackle the long existing problems that wealthier neighborhoods have their parks well financed and maintained, while parks in poorer neighborhoods got neglected, said de Blasio. Endit
