Wolfsburg down FSV Frankfurt 2-1 to progress in German Cup

Xinhua, August 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

Steffen Schaefer's own goal and Bas Dost's goal helped Wolfsburg to knockout third-division team FSV Frankfurt in the first round of the German Cup on Saturday.

Wolfsburg dominated the first half and smoothed the way for the second round with two goals early in the game. However, Frankfurt pulled one back in the second half, giving the "Wolves" a hard fight.

Dieter Hecking's men ensured a perfect start into the encounter as Frankfurt' s Steffen Schaefer cleared Daniel Didavi' s cross into the wrong goal, securing the opener for the visitors.

Frankfurt were unable to respond whereas Wolfsburg continued with their powerful performance to double the lead seven minutes later, when Didavi's cross found Bas Dost, who tapped in from close range.

Wolfsburg controlled the proceedings on the pitch but failed to turn their dominance into goals. Meanwhile, Frankfurt's Ranisav Jovanovic missed the chance to beat Wolfsburg goalkeeper Koen Casteels in the 36th minute.

After the break, Wolfsburg wasted the opportunity to grab the 3-0 lead as Frankfurt custodian Jannis Pellowski denied Yannick Gerhardt from very close range with 46 minutes played.

However, Wolfsburg's wastefulness got punished in the 52nd minute after Fabian Schleusener poked home Adil Chihi's square pass into the box to reduce the arrears to 2-1.

Frankfurt pressed frenetically while Wolfsburg wobbled. Yet, neither Chihi nor Shawn Maurice Berry were able to force the top-flight team into the over time. Endit
