The following are news highlights in Zambia's major media outlets on Thursday.

-- Zambia's electoral body said stakeholders have completed the verification exercise of ballot papers for next week's general elections and referendum.

Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) public relations manager Crispin Akufuna said the verification process has been completed and that the electoral body will commence the distribution of the ballot papers to various provinces and districts.

Zambia will hold legislative, parliamentary and local government elections on August 11 alongside a referendum meant to amend part three of the constitution which deals with people's rights. (Zambia Daily Mail)

-- Zambia's central bank said it intends to launch a new payment system which will interlink all financial players in the country.

Bank of Zambia director of banking, currency and payments, Lazarus Kamanga, said the National Financial Switch system was expected to become operational next year and that some of the features include the payment cycle such as mobile money providers aimed at promoting efficiency in the cash industry. -- The Zambian government has called for increased funding to agricultural research institutes if the country was to attain the status of being a regional food basket.

Minister of Agriculture Given Lubinda said the government was committed to ensuring that agriculture becomes the mainstay of the country's economy. He said the government was concerned over the low funding to research institutions in the country, adding that improving productivity in the sector will require increased investment in research.
